Sculptural lines, exquisite curves, Louise Boycheva takes a look at contemporary lighting design
Lighting plays a central role in the success of any interior scheme. There is a wealth to choose from in terms of lighting design. Unsurprisingly some of the most inspirational contemporary designs emanate from the Continent. For me, two brands stand out: Mantra and Diyas.
Designed in Valencia, Spain, Mantra offers a broad range of modern classic ceiling, wall, floor and table lighting. Mantra lighting has an artisan quality with a distinctive designer edge. Its Continental style is typified in the architectural Gaudi and Dali ranges, inspired by two of Spain’s most celebrated artists, Antoni Gaudi and Salvador Dali. The Dali range is evocative of the artist’s striking and bizarre painterly images. The range includes the one-light polished chrome table lamp which offers surreal lines for an ultra-modern, innovative style. It retails at around £107.
The Gaudi range follows the artist’s organic style inspired by nature. It pays homage to Gaudi’s wrought iron craftsmanship, one of the many skills visible in his architectural masterpieces. Lighting from this range wouldn’t look out of place in an art gallery. The six-light, three-arm ceiling pendant makes a true artistic statement and retails at £250.
Diyas has an exquisite range of crystal contemporary lighting. I am assured that only the finest Asfour Egyptian lead crystals are used in its crystal chandeliers. For me the Santo collection has a gothic appeal, the lights having an almost sinister skeletal quality. Other collections include the Bask which has New World style and sophistication; whilst the opulent Zinta has more traditional influences.
